A standard car battery is designed to deliver a large burst of power to start an engine, then recharge quickly. A deep cycle battery is built to discharge slowly and steadily over long periods, down to 50–80% of its capacity, and then fully recharge, repeatedly. Using a standard battery in a deep cycle application will significantly shorten its life.

Can I use a deep cycle battery as a car battery?

Not recommended. Deep cycle batteries are not optimised for the high burst of current needed to start an engine. They may work in an emergency, but using one as a primary starting battery will likely result in poor cranking performance and premature failure. How long do deep cycle batteries last?

AGM deep cycle batteries typically last 3–5 years under regular use. Gel batteries can last slightly longer (around 5–7 years in standby applications). How do I charge a deep cycle battery?

Deep cycle batteries can be charged via a mains-powered smart charger, a solar charge controller (with solar panels), or an alternator while driving. Each battery type has specific charging requirements, particularly lithium, which requires a lithium-compatible charger or charge controller. Using the wrong charger can reduce battery life or cause damage.

What depth of discharge is safe for a deep cycle battery?

AGM batteries are typically recommended to discharge no deeper than 50% to maximise cycle life. Gel batteries can safely go to around 50–60%. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries can be safely discharged to 80–90% without the same degradation penalty, which is a key advantage over AGM and gel in off-grid applications.

Can I connect multiple deep cycle batteries together?

Yes. Batteries can be connected in parallel (to increase Ah capacity while keeping the same voltage) or in series (to increase voltage while keeping the same Ah). Always use identical batteries of the same age, chemistry, and capacity when building a battery bank. Mixing different battery types or ages in the same bank is not recommended.
